We leave our homeland, carrying dreams and aspirations, hoping to establish roots in Germany—only to find that identity becomes an invisible barrier, and the glass ceiling in the workplace is harder to break than we imagined.
We hope to bridge China and Germany with our knowledge and experience, yet in a rapidly changing social environment, we often feel powerless.
We choose, voluntarily or involuntarily, to start a new life in Germany, yet every time we return home, we find ourselves speechless in the face of the expectations and longings of our aging family members.
We are well aware of the alienation brought by social atomization, yet we also experience firsthand how difficult it is to integrate into society and find like-minded individuals in a foreign land.
Over the past three years, countless stories of “We” have been heard, expressed, remembered, and reflected at 706 Berlin....
The uncertainty of arriving in a new place, the joy of finding resonance, the late nights obsessively exploring unfinished questions—here, they all intersect, echo, and become imprints of our time.
What defines a good era? What makes a bad one? Perhaps there is no definitive answer. But through every encounter, every conversation, and every moment spent together, we try to understand, to connect, and to seek answers of our own.
706Berlin e. V. is honored to collaborate with the Berlin Contemporary China Network (BCCN) to invite Professor Xiang Biao, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, to join us in a conversation about our distance from the present time.
This event will be interactive. During registering, you need to submit Questions or Topics that you would like to discuss with Professor Xiang. Due to time constraints, we may not be able to address all but will consolidate related or similar ones to ensure a more focused discussion.
In order to make the discussion more focused, we encourage you to prioritize topics related to your study, life or migration experience in China, and try to avoid questions that are too macro (e.g. “How do you see the future of China-EU relations?”). We look forward to thinking and dialoging with you.
